80s Synth-Jams Get Football Players Pumped!

By Chris Mottram
If you were throwing a party, and the police were called because you had Phil Collins turned up to 11, that might be slightly embarrassing. But not for the Arizona’s football team, who blasted fake crowd noise and music during practice yesterday in preparation for their game at Arizona State this Saturday.
“The University of Arizona Police Department received numerous noise complaints from surrounding homes during the UA football team’s two-hour practice inside the stadium. The noise blared from about 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Arizona coaches capped practice by piping in Phil Collins’ ‘In the Air Tonight’.”
There is actually “In the Air tonight” precedent. Redskins linebacker London Fletcher is famous (notorious?) for listening to the Collins song right before taking the field each Sunday.
In case you haven’t taken a trip back to 1981 in a while, here’s a refresher. Try not to get too stoked and/or amped at your desk:

UPDATE: In an article for SN, Rams linebacker Chris Draft confirms football players’ man-love for Phil Collins’ righteous jams.
“One of the best songs, which you’d never think of as a football song, is Phil Collins’ ‘In the Air Tonight.’ Oh man. I’m telling you, when you turn that song up in a football stadium, it’s one of the best pregame songs. It starts out real slow, and it’s kind of eerie. A lot of players might not know the song by name, but if you play it for them, they’re like, ‘Oh, yeah, I like that song.’”
