Five-Year-Old Done Killed Him a Huge Bear

By Chris Mottram
Aside from that time I ran over a possum, I’ve never killed an animal, so I can’t relate to the awesomeness that must be associated with taking down a 445-pound black bear. You know, if you’re into that sort of thing.

But that’s exactly what Tre Merritt did this weekend.
And did I mention that he is five? And happens to be a decedent of Davy Freakin’ Crockett? This is too rich to be true.
Tre Merritt, a descendant of Davy Crockett, was hunting with his grandfather Mike Merritt when a black bear happened upon their stand.
“Davy supposedly killed him a bear when he was three. And Tre is five and really killed a bear. I really doubt if Davy killed one when he was three.”
“He came in about 40 to 50 yards,” Mike Merritt said of the black bear, “and when he got in the open, I whistled at him and he stopped and I said, ‘Shoot Tre.’”
Did Tre’s paw-paw (as he’s referred to in the article) really just doubt Davy Crockett? I hear Davy killed an 800-pound grizzly from his mother’s womb. With his bare hands. Bet little Tre never did that.
Nevertheless, impressive killing ability on that youngster. I’d suggest any and all animals in the Dewitt, Arkansas area pack up shop now.
(Note: Clearly, the above photo is neither Tre Merritt nor Davy Crockett, but it is, however, a big dead animal.)
