Sports don’t start and end with a referee’s whistle. FirstCuts, a blog dedicated to sports culture, will cover everything outside the lines, from the games to the gear. Look for expanded FirstCuts content after the New Year.
There’s a solid chance you’ve still got someone on your holiday shopping list that you haven’t been able to cross off to this point. Fear not, I’ll be dropping a few ideas for the next three days to get you through the unwashed masses of insane shoppers. Today’s focus is on gaming.
FirstCuts: Last-Minute Sports Gaming Gifts
Want your friend or family member to react like the Nintendo 64 kid? Well finding them a Nintendo Wii this holiday season is a good start, but that’s easier said than done. For argument’s sake, let’s say they’ve already been lucky enough to get their hands on Nintendo’s latest console. Each system comes packaged with Wii Sports, and we’ve got the perfect not-so-expensive add-on item for fans of this title. Check out the Wii Sports pack ($19.99, Gamestop.com). You can give your Wiimote attachments like a tennis racquet, baseball bat or golf club. These are plastic, so if you’re worried about replicating that Southwest Airlines commercial, try the more furniture-friendly NERF version for $34.99.
Also deserving of an honorable mention ...
All-Pro Football 2K8 (Playstation 3, Xbox 360), $9.99, Best Buy: OK, at this point you’ve probably had your fill of Madden 08. 2K8 doesn’t have the same deep gameplay, but isn’t it worth that low price for the comedic value of getting to use O.J. Simpson in a game?
Gift cards... No, seriously. We’re sort of through the big game season when it comes to sports. The major titles are out, but be ready for the beginning of next year when WiiFit comes out for the Nintendo Wii. The Guitar Hero series has proven that the more interactive this stuff becomes, the more wildly successful you can be. Watch a video of people trying to balance on the board, and tell me it doesn’t look like fun. Stash some cash and be ready when it comes out in the early part of 2008.
