Dick Vitale Will Have Throat Sugery

By Chris Mottram
If you have watched any of the games Dickie V has called for ESPN this season, you surely would’ve noticed that his voice was struggling in a serious way. We now know why.
In an open letter on his website, Vitale explained that he requires surgery on his vocal cord and will be out several months.
During the past month and a half, I have had a very difficult time with discomfort in my throat. ... After an examination, it was determined that I had lesions on my left vocal cord and that they should be surgically removed. Dr. Zeitels said his goal is to have me back sitting at courtside in early February.
It simply says “sitting courtside in early February,” which would lead me to believe he won’t be announcing anymore games this season.
Love him or hate him (and most people I know lean towards the latter), I think he’s great for the game. Sure, he can be annoying, to put it mildly, and his Duke-love his way beyond the realm of professionalism, but you have to love his enthusiasm for the sport. And, more importantly, for the fans.
For the record, in his letter, he referred to his colleagues at ESPN as “beautiful people” (twice), “wonderful people,” and “special people.” Needless to say, he enjoys working for the Worldwide Leader.
