Think back to your college days – or to perhaps this morning – and you should recall what the “walk of shame” is. Things are still blurry as you try to sort out what happened last night. Much like when your roommate helped you recall the debauchery, so too are we here to help sort out yesterday’s sports madness.
Purdue, Central Michigan Score Lots of Points
The defense in the Motor City Bowl was so outstanding, it’s a shame someone had to lose. There were a total of 99 points scored (second highest every for a bowl game), Purdue’s Curtis Painter tossed a school-record 546 yards, and Purdue had a 21 point lead three separate times. So naturally the game was decided on the only field goal made as Purdue won 52-49 as time ran out.
Award for Most Blatant Selfishness Goes to ...
71-year-old Eddie Sutton who has returned to college basketball coaching for the sole purpose of winning his 800th game. He’s taking over at San Francisco and when asked about No. 800 he said, “It’s very important. From a selfish standpoint, it is something I’m excited about.” Apparently, personal achievements are quite important to the Suttons. Eddie’s son, Scott, got in on the craziness as well, saying, “He still has a lot of competitive fire in him. ... And obviously, he’s two wins shy of winning 800 games. There’s only been three or four other coaches that have ever accomplished that goal. It would put him in an elite group of coaches.”
Without Skiles, Bulls Still Aren’t Good
Clearly, Scott Skiles was the problem in Chicago. In their first game without the coach, the Bulls fought their guts out and came away with an inspired victory in San Antonio. Oh. Nevermind. They lost by 15 points. But at least -- according to interim coach Pete Myers -- “effort-wise [the Bulls] played in spurts.” Some effort is better than no effort, right?
