FirstCuts: Schilling ready to focus on gaming

By Chris Littmann
Sports don’t start and end with a referee’s whistle. FirstCuts, a blog dedicated to sports culture, will cover everything outside the lines, from the games to the gear.
Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling is ready to step away from baseball ... in a year. That’s the word out of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Indeed, Schilling is ready to trade hardball for work with 38 Studios (previously known as Green Monster Games), the game development group he founded in 2006.

Schilling invited a small group of journalists to his suite at Caesar’s Palace during CES and spilled the beans on his future plans to work on his massively multiplayer role-playing game -- or MMORPG for the game aficionados out there -- that is only known by code name “Copernicus.â€

“I’m done. This is my final year,” Schilling said.
“No one looks at this and says it’s a natural progression,” Schilling said. “You’re a frickin’ celebrity athlete who’s going to make a game? Come on!,” he adds, mimicking the peanut gallery.
But Schilling is adamant he is in it for the long haul.
“This is my life after baseball,” the star pitcher said of the game and the studio he formed to create it. “After baseball, I will do nothing except be a father, husband, and run this company.”[/quote]
Schilling has two notable partners on the subject. Best-selling author R.A. Salvatore is along for the ride. Joining Schilling and Salvatore is comic legend/action figure creator/significant baseball collector/Edmonton Oilers co-owner Todd McFarlane.
MMORPGs aren’t my thing. For as much time as I burn on video games, I can’t even imagine how much more I’d spend if I was trying to live life in a parallel fantasy world. I’ll stick to being frustrated with the “hard†level of Guitar Hero 3. Best of luck to Schilling and his crew ... you know, once that whole baseball thing is over.
