Hawaii Hires Coordinator as New Head Coach

By Spencer Hall
With June Jones gone to SMU and rollin’ in new Texas-sized money, Hawaii needed a new coach and didn’t go far to find it -- they didn’t even leave the island, allegedly. Two-time Warriors defensive coordinator Greg McMackin will likely be the new head coach at Hawaii, a pick Jones endorsed upon leaving and one indicating that Hawaii will not attempt to fix what is not broken in the program.
McMackin’s Hawaii defense in ‘07 impressed: 34th in total defense with 20 interceptions, tied for tenth best in the nation. They played a large role in pressuring Tyler Tharp in the crucial season finale with Boise State, a win that secured the WAC title for Hawaii.
McMackin’s a veteran coach with both NFL and college experience, but Hawaii will be his first crack at a head coaching job. Whatever decisions he makes on the personnel side remain to be seen, but it’s hard to imagine him changing much on the staff he is already familiar with and has been successful with thus far.
One request, though, from me to Coach McMackin: If you do decide to change anything, please don’t make it the ha’a. In fact, I’ll buy an instructional video just to keep it going if he’s thinking about changing a single slap or WHOOO-AGGGHHH.
