Louisville basketball players Juan Palacios and Jerry Smith celebrated following an intense moment in the Cardinals’ emotional victory over the Kentucky Wildcats, and when they did, from a certain angle, it looked like they were about to kiss.
From my perspective, I think it looks like Palacios is trying to suck Smith’s soul out of his left ear. This is not what Louisville-area readers thought, however:
Some of the comments registered by angry, offended and/or baffled readers: “Awful,” “an embarrassment,” “horrible decision,” “poor judgment,” “distasteful,” “a mystery” and “shame on you.”
It gets better when Platt suggests that shots like this are “a Rorschach test” for readers, essentially implying that those who saw the comment were, in essence, looking to be offended to begin with, or looking for some hot man-on-man action in their local sports pages. Touché, Ms Platt!
I did call the Louisville Courier-Journal, who like most newspapers don’t seem to understand this “internet” thing, and they insisted on $200 for use of the photo. Since $200 is three months rent down here at Sporting Blog HQ in Ciudad Juarez, the editors nixed the idea from the start.
In its place, I have a video to please the hyperoffended Louisville readers who saw the love that dare not speak its name in a completely innocent photo of two basketball players.
