Golfweek Uses Lynching Comment to Sell Mags

First, the background info. As you’ve surely seen by now, Golf Channel’s Kelly Tilghman made the horrible, inexcusable mistake of saying the following line about Tiger Woods last week:

Tilghman apologized for her comment, owned up to the mistake and is paying the price in the form of a two-week suspension. So, let’s move on and not continue to make light of her extremely offensive blunder.
Or not.
Golfweek has decided to go the completely opposite route and use the image of a swinging noose on the cover of its newest issue:

Uh oh, PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem is not happy: “Clearly, what Kelly said was inappropriate and unfortunate, and she obviously regrets her choice of words. But we consider Golfweek’s imagery of a swinging noose on its cover to be outrageous and irresponsible. It smacks of tabloid journalism. It was a naked attempt to inflame and keep alive an incident that was heading to an appropriate conclusion.” Snap.
Golfweek editor Dave Seanor, defend yourself: “Was it an arresting image? Yes, it was. We chose it because it was an image we thought would draw attention to an issue we thought deserved some intelligent dialogue. If you’re going to do this story on the cover, you don’t have many choices. It’s Kelly Tilghman’s face or a noose.”
Kelly’s face vs. noose. Remain an obscure golf magazine vs. use inflammatory image to garner publicity. Yes, that was a tough choice for Golfweek.
