China Doing Its Best to Cover Up Olympic Deaths

By Chris Mottram
If you’re suffering from a case of the mondays, just remember that your job could be a lot worse. You could be one of the poor souls working to finish the “Bird’s Nest” Stadium in Beijing in time for the Summer Olympics.

Due in part to the demand for workers to operate while exhausted and in poor weather conditions at extreme heights, no fewer than 10 people have died since ‘03 building the stadium. Although the general public would have no idea because their deaths have been covered up by the Chinese, according to a London Times article.
There are several eye witnesses who share stories of men falling from atop the stadium to their death, but this account was particularly horrible:
Some of the deaths appear to have been bad luck. One employee, who worked on the site for three years, described the fate of a worn-out migrant worker who decided to sleep overnight on the ground inside the stadium.
When a bulldozer drove into the arena before first light, it ran over him. The driver was so stunned that in his confusion he reversed the vehicle and its tracks crushed the victim for a second time.
And almost as bad as death, is that the men are totally sex-deprived. According to one worker, “Most of us haven’t been home to sleep with our wives for six months or a year. The single men have no chance or time to talk love with girls. ... I go to the barber’s shop very often and I know how to bargain with the prostitutes. Sometimes I get a discount from 200 yuan to 50 yuan.”
Note to self: Next time you’re in China, don’t go to the barber shop and expect to get a haircut.
