The thrilling world of professional chess rears its head for the second time this week following the death of ex-American chessmaster Bobby Fischer.
In the match between Nigel Short and Ivan Cheparinov, Cheparinov began his moves before a single piece had moved by refusing to shake hands with Short. The video below captures the stunning drama of the moment:
Shake Hands And Make Nice, Dork Warriors
Simple gamesmanship this was not: Short petitioned officials for a forfeit by Cheparinov since shaking hands is, by recommendation and not rule, an essential element of a chess match under the rules of competitive chess.
After some extremely testy memoing and written apologizing, the match continued the following day. Would-be psych-out troopers of the chess world, take note: Cheparinov lost the match to Short, who left the room clearly elated at his victory. Sportsmanship always wins out, even when you’re just playing a game for tweedy dorks like chess.↵
