Sports don’t start and end with a referee’s whistle. FirstCuts, a blog dedicated to sports culture, will cover everything outside the lines, from games to gear.
Cal guard Patrick Christopher is an accomplished Pac-10 player, averaging 16.5 points for the Golden Bears this season, but he also packs a mean shoe collection.

I’d heard about his exploits through message board postings -- a particular instance where he broke out a pair of Jordan XVI, which were originally released in 2001, for a game this season -- but even the Associated Press caught wind of his hobby. To quote Common, “He has a fetish for shoes that’s athletic.â€
Christopher has some 50 different pairs of Nike Air Force 1s and another couple dozen Air Jordans that he plays in, having spent thousands of dollars on a love of athletic footwear that developed when he was just 5. He donated a large number of those along the way to needy children at his church as his foot rapidly grew.
The Golden Bears aren’t the top team in the Pac-10, but there’s little doubt that Christopher probably has one of the meanest shoe collections of any player in his league or any other one across the country.
