So it’s the first weekend since September without football, and I’m sure you’re as depressed as I am (and the poor fan pictured above), so I’m putting together a list of things you can do this weekend other than watching television by ACTUALLY leaving the house. Here we go ...
1. Go to a movie: I hear that Cloverfield monster is both realistic AND really scary.
2. Go Skiing: We are in the midst of the Winter X-Games, so what better way to celebrate them than by not watching on TV.
3. Take the missus to a winery: You know it’s been months since the two of you hung out on a weekend.
4. Go see a play: That Spamalot is supposed to be awfully entertaining and you can never go wrong with some Mama Mia.
5. Start a new hobby: The day after the Super Bowl is the most depressing day ever, so what better way to bang out the doldrums then take that cooking class you’ve been putting off.
Okay, now let’s be honest. It’s too cold out to leave the house this weekend, and all of those things are WAY too expensive for a sports fan (or blogger) like myself. Here are the sports you can watch this weekend at a comfortable 70 degrees.
- The X-Games: Sure I told you to skip out on them, and the ever-annoying Sal Masekela is the host, but there’s always a chance that you’ll catch someone falling out of the sky like Jake Brown did in the Summer Games last year. The Winter X-Games are on ESPN tonight with Snowmobile Motocross and Snowboarding Big Air then move to ABC for Saturday and Sunday.
- There are also eight Top 25 teams in action this Saturday and ESPN and it’s networks are carrying most of the games. Gameday is going to be at Southern Illinois for the day, but the action gets underway early with Gonzaga at No. 1 Memphis on ESPN (noon) and UConn at No. 8 Indiana on CBS (1PM).
The games just get better on Sunday as some of the best rivalries in college basketball will go down. Michigan hasn’t been one of the better teams the past few years, but they always play No. 10 Michigan State tough and the day is capped off with the No. 5 Duke Blue Devils heading to College Park to take on the Maryland Terrapins (FSN or local coverage).
- You’ve also got CBS’ first golf telecast of the year on Saturday and Sunday (Buick Invitational) and the Australian Open Women’s Championship tonight at 9:30. That should keep you from doing anything productive. You hate cooking anyway.↵
