Paying attention is very difficult. I can’t tell you the number of times my mind’s wandered as I land 747s when the pilot passes out and they scream “Can anyone fly a plane?!?!”, or when I’m cutting a bagel or something like that.
Therefore, I completely and totally understand how someone running five and a half minute miles for 26.2 miles in a row could let their mind wander. Your body is burning 3000 calories in one go--about a day and a half’s caloric allowance for a 150 pound runner keeping a good pace.
Kenyan pros are probably burning even more than that with their insane pace, but even the most distressed runner has to pay a little bit of attention to traffic. A tiny bit of prevention goes a long way, like when you decide to look up and not run into an oncoming commuter tram.
Kenyan Marathoner Runs Into Tram
The runner, James Kipkenboy of Kenya, went to the hospital in Athens, Greece and was treated there (that’s if our French is accurate, and it usually isn’t.) He did not finish the race, something everyone besides hockey players obviously understands.
Helpful update! He’s fine, according to the latest reports. ↵
