24 straight--that’s not a rivalry, that’s ownership, and it is exactly the streak the Kansas Jayhawks claimed over the Kansas State Wildcats in basketball until last night’s stunning 84-75 waxing of the Jayhawks in Manhattan. .
The victory spawned a “mob scene” on the floor following the game, something you may view below. (For the extremely impatient, you may click the 2:00 mark for the really exuberant singing and yeah-rah-rah bits.)
Manhattan Mayhem: KSU Downs KU
You may credit the dominating play of Michael Beasley (25 points), Jacob Pullen (20 points,) or Bill Walker (22,) but that’s missing the central point here: this was the first completely chicken-free year for K-State. Wildcat fans had a tradition of throwing live chickens at the Kansas bench before the game, a gesture mocking the Jayhawks’ avian mascot.
The practice was discontinued after March of 2007, when PETA started writing letters and administration finally discouraged students from smuggling the birds into the games. And in the first matchup following the ban of the chicken toss...victory! This should make it clear to all watching: if you throw chickens at the opposition, you will lose 24 games in a row to them. If you stop, you win and snap said streak. See? Sports are easy, friend.
