LiveBlog: Jags-Steelers, first quarter

Vinnie Iyer breaks down the ongoing action of the Jaguars-Steelers first-round AFC playoff game:
Jags need to pass early, too (8:48 p.m.): It’s clear the Steelers are doing everything they can to clog the running lanes against Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew. David Garrard needs to get in a rhythm, too, with a short passing game. He completes only one pass on the Jaguars’ second drive, which predictably ends with a punt. I also expect a deep shot or two from both sides pretty soon. The running will come easier in the second half.
Back to the run: (8:38 p.m.) On their second drive, the Steelers run the ball on four of five plays before punting back to the Jaguars. I like the dink and dunk passing approach much better early and then featuring more of Najeh Davenport later.
A zig-zagging Jag (8:29 p.m.): Few things are more fun to watch in the NFL than Maurice Jones-Drew in the open field. He gives Jacksonville a do-over after the Steelers’ score, as he zigs, zags and zooms past Pittsburgh’s kickoff coverage all the way to the 1, where backfield buddy Fred Taylor promptly finds paydirt on the next play. Not a good start for the Steelers trying to stop that terrific twosome. Jacksonville 7, Pittsburgh 7.
Big start for Big Ben (8:25 p.m.): The Steelers are going the pass to set up the run route, but not in the traditional way. They pretty much stick with intermediate throws to Hines Ward and the tight ends, as Ben Roethlisberger drops back on the first six snaps of the drive. He goes a solid 5-for-6, with Najeh Davenport providing the punch-in. To make matters worse for the Jags, ace defensive tackle John Henderson, who got caught for a horse-collar on a sack, is carted off the field. Big Ben looks to already be in a rhythm, and Ward looks like he will be very busy tonight. Pittsburgh 7, Jacksonville 0.
We have kickoff (8:14 p.m.): Najeh Davenport returns the opening kickoff from the Jaguars’ Josh Scobee up to the Pittsburgh 20. Davenport needs to have a big rushing game to take pressure off Ben Roethlisberger in the face of a tough Jacksonville pass rush while working behind an injury-riddled offensive line.
Pre-kickoff thoughts (8:05 p.m. ET): The Jaguars come in with great confidence having already won once at Pittsburgh, while the Steelers will be motivated to exact some revenge. Those emotions should translate into some hard hitting everywhere early. Adding to the grittiness will be the unfriendly conditions of Heinz Field, which is at 39 degrees with a bit of light rain.↵
