LiveBlog: Jags-Steelers, third quarter

Vinnie Iyer breaks down the ongoing action of the Jaguars-Steelers first-round AFC playoff game:
Give them five (10:28 p.m.): As good as the Jags can be offensively, their strength is still defense, especially up front, and they’ve been absolutely dominant there on Saturday night. Rob Meier becomes the fifth Jaguar to sack Ben Roethlisberger, and the Steelers should just give up running now, still down 18 and having totaled only 30 rushing yards on 19 carries through three quarters. It will take the biggest quarter of Big Ben’s life for the Steelers to win now.
Now that’s Jacksonville football (10:15 p.m.): I just realized this is the first time the Jaguars have played in a marquee national audience game on free TV -- let’s just say Michaels and Madden is a lot different than Eagle and Wilcots. Anyway, so this might be the first time many NFL fans are getting a close look at this really good team. And the Jags’ latest TD drive is textbook: Start with Fred Taylor straight ahead, get David Garrard in a groove making good decisions and plays with his legs and his arm, and then finish with Maurice Jones-Drew. Garrard’s mobility and ability to find his wide receivers in key stretches in games is why the Jags are so much better than they were with Byron Letfwich. Wow. Jags-Patriots would be a great game. Jacksonville 28, Pittsburgh 10.
Where’s Ward (10:05 p.m.)? Every time the Steelers get into the red zone, as they did off the interception, I expect Hines Ward to make a big catch. But he has caught only one ball -- that wacky deflection -- since grabbing three on the opening TD drive. Big Ben goes back to Heath Miller for a nice gain, but then everything sputters and the Steelers settle for a 28-yard field goal. They could have really used the mo’ that comes with seven points. Jacksonville 21, Pittsburgh 10.
That rare Garrard pick (9:59 p.m.): The Steelers desperately needed a big play by their defense on the Jaguars’ opening drive of the second half, and they get it on the second play and David Garrard’s first pass, which is interception by James Farrior at the Jacksonville 43. After that breakdown at the end of the second half, Ben Roethlisberger needs to play mistake-free and put Pittsburgh back in the end zone to make it a game.↵
