Tom Dienhart breaks down the action of the BCS championship game, quarter by quarter:
What I learned: Ohio State is in trouble. Big trouble. The Buckeyes have seen a 10-0 lead morph into a 24-10 deficit as quickly as you can say “laissez les bons temps rouler!†That’s “let the good times roll,†for you non-Cajuns.
Play of the quarter: LSU is back, baby! Matt Flynn threw a quick pass to Richard Dickson for a 13-yard TD early in the quarter to tie the game. The drive was aided by two penalties and was highlighted a long pass to Demetrius Byrd.
Stat of the quarter: 1, blocked field goal for LSU. Ricky Jean-Francois planted—and I mean PLANTED-Ohio State guard Ben Person on his keister en route to snuffing out a 38-yard field goal that would have broken a 10-10 tie.
Here’s an idea: Ohio State needs to get tough on third downs. Check this out: LSU has converted 8 of 10 third downs for the game. It’s called keeping drives alive. And it’s killing the Buckeyes.
Wow: LSU offensive coordinator Gary Crowton is feeling it, as he’s in a groove calling a nice mix of running and passing plays that have Ohio State’s defense off balance. The best drive of the night was a 10-play, 66-yard effort that saw Flynn hit Brandon LaFell in the corner of the end zone for a perfectly thrown 10-yard TD pass to give LSU a 17-10 lead. LSU added a short TD run from Jacob Hester after a Boeckman interception to make it 24-10 at halftime. Will Ohio State recover? All together now: “Oh-oh, here we go again, Brutus!â€

LaFell’s TD catch caps the best drive of the night.
