Tom Dienhart breaks down the action of the BCS championship game, quarter by quarter:
What I learned: Trindon Holliday is really, really fast. LSU has done a good job of getting him involved in the running game with some quick pitches that have forced Ohio State to defend the entire field and opened the passing game for Flynn.
Play of the quarter: Ohio State got a big stop on LSU’s opening possession, forcing a punt. But Ohio State was called for roughing the punter, keeping the drive alive. Shortly thereafter, the Buckeyes were whistled for their fifth personal foul of the game. The Tigers took advantage, scoring on a Flynn-to-Doucet pass to make it 31-10, LSU.
Stat of the quarter: 1, penalty on LSU. It was an intentional grounding call on Flynn with about 11 minutes left in the quarter. More importantly, it was the Bayou Bengals’ first penalty of the game.
Here’s an idea: Tackle someone, Brutus! The Tigers’ drive to open the half was assisted by sloppy tackling. Gee, I kinda of get the feeling the Buckeyes may be giving up.
Wow: Where’s that fork I was supposed to use to eat that massive chili dog? I need to stick it in Brutus. The Buckeyes are done. Ohio State was met with adversity—and it didn’t respond. I’m guessing everyone is flashing back to Glendale, Ariz. That TD catch by Brian Robiskie on 4th-and-goal late in the quarter to make it 31-17 after a Flynn pick did give OSU some life. I said “some.â€
