Dr. Lou Holtz Drops a Hitler Reference, Continues to Make No Sense

↵A cardinal rule of modern life: leave Hitler out of it. Unless you’re discussing Nazi Germany, the Holocaust or imperialist fascism, you really shouldn’t be bringing Hitler into any polite conversation. This rule is enforced treble in sports punditry: ESPN’s Jemele Hill earned a suspension earlier this year for likening rooting for the Celtics to “saying Hitler was a victim.” It’s not that dictatorial analogies are off-limits -- I dare say a Papa Doc reference would have passed by without notice -- but Hitler is an absolute non-starter. You just don’t do it.
↵
↵ESPN’s Lou Holtz, um, doesn’t understand that. Deadspin explains Dr. Lou’s Friday night crime on college Football Live:↵↵⇥The context of the conversation was about Rich Rodriguez’s not-so-great start as the University of Michigan’s head coach and Holtz chose this phrase as part of his analysis: “Ya know, Hitler was a great leader too.”↵↵As with most Holtz segments, this doesn’t even make logical sense. On what planet is Rodriguez a great leader? If you’re implying Rich Rod has terrible, terrible intentions, you at least need to adjust your analogy calculator to account for his lack of success. Holtz’s remark doesn’t just offend on decency grounds; it is offensive to common sense, as well.↵
