Thank Goodness Tom Cable Instilled Some Discipline in Oakland

This Raiders-Jets match might last until Tuesday. In the first 28 plays from scrimmage, Oakland (long champions of the yellow rag) got hit with eight penalties. One (an illegal formation call on Javon Walker) negated a JaMarcus Russell touchdown toss to tight end Zach Miller. A second (offsides) turned a New York fourth and four into a Jets first down.

↵Oakland’s early salvation has come in the form of a Brett Favre interception at the goal line. Favre has otherwise been fine, offering up a cornucopia of dinks and (cough) dunks. Russell, on the other end, has been OK, missing a few targets but exceeding (incredibly low) expectations in total. Sebastian Janikowski could have handed Russell an early 6-3 lead, but the goalpost mysteriously shifted to the left as he booted a chip attempt.

↵Speaking of defensive battles, Washington and Cleveland have played to a 0-0 standstill late in the first half. No turnovers and only two plays longer than 16 yards. Derek Anderson (3-for-14, 17 yards) should take off his blindfold.↵
