When SEC Trash Talking Goes Wrong

This might get confusing so bear with me. On this side, there is Reggie Parent, a white man who spends his Saturday’s rooting for LSU. On the other side is Reggie Drummer, a black man who spends his Saturday’s rooting for Georgia. Parent and Drummer work together in Baton Rouge. Leading up to last weekend’s LSU-Georgia game, the two engaged in what was described as “friendly trash talking” at work. Parent (remember: white guy) told Drummer (black guy) that if Georgia beat his Tigers, there would be a “surprise” waiting for Drummer at work on Monday morning.↵↵And by “surprise,” Parent meant he’d construct just about the most hateful, offensive, racist prop imaginable and leave it for Drummer to find:↵

↵↵⇥ ↵⇥When Drummer arrived for work Monday, he says he found a hangman’s noose. “I noticed the noose on the ground. I asked him about it. They all laughed at me like it was a joke,” Drummer said. Drummer then called police.↵⇥↵⇥An East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputy who responded to the call wrote in his report that employees at the business “witnessed the accused making the noose earlier in the morning.” The deputy wrote, “The victim stated as an African American man, the noose made a clear statement to him.” The report also stated, “Two other African American men working in the same area also expressed offense to the gesture.”↵⇥

↵⇥↵⇥The deputy arrested the accused employee, 48-year-old Reggie Parent of Baton Rouge, and charged him with Public Display of a Noose.↵⇥

↵↵What is this Public Display of a Noose law, you ask? Well, it was enacted by the state of Louisiana just this past summer to discourage idiots like Parent from these displays of racism and intimidation. The penalty? Up to a $5,000 fine and/or one year in prison. This is the first time anyone has been arrested under the new law. Seems to me this would be a good chance for the courts to make an example out of someone.
