Road to Game Day: Getting STOKED For the Sunflower Showdown in Lawrence, Kansas

Words by Keith Arnold, who↵is touring the country with his brother Phil as they invade a different↵college campus each Saturday during the football season. They’ll be reporting back in this space with their various adventures. You can also keep tabs on their vagabonding over at RoadtoGameDay.com. This weekend, they're in Lawrence for the KU-Kansas State game.

When you think about big match-ups this week, I’m not sure the first thing that pops to your head is Kansas-Kansas State. In an ideal world, we’d be sitting in Jacksonville right now, watching Georgia fans point at jean shorts and mullets, and about a thousand Florida fans wearing some kind of Tim Tebow/Superman Halloween costume. But, since we’ve already seen Florida, we’ve already seen Georgia, and we can’t validate watching our third Texas game in four weeks, we came to Lawrence, Kansas, home of the Kansas Jayhawks. ↵↵One of the goals behind this trip was to see different places, and as this season rolls along, we got to realizing that we’ve seen multiple teams, multiple times, and even if we needed to see a couple of mediocre teams, it was worth it just to get to some cool campuses. And Lawrence is definitely a picturesque place, and with the autumn colors in full display, looks like it could be something out of a collegiate catalog. ↵

↵But let’s talk about the Sunflower Showdown! Let’s get excited about a Kansas team that got absolutely run out of the stadium last week at home, and a .500 Kansas State team that signed 19 Juco players and has coach Ron Prince on the hot seat! All we know is that when the Jayhawks and the Wildcats get together you can throw the records out because they’re playing for the Governor’s Cup! (It’s not working for you either, is it?) As we walked down Massachusetts Street last night, the main drag of downtown Lawrence, we were shocked how empty it was. Needless to say, I think Sunflower fever hasn’t quite caught on here, either.↵

↵↵Okay, if we can’t get excited about the football game, let’s get excited because it’s Halloween, and we’re in a pretty cool college town. And any time it’s Halloween in college, that means that girls are going to dress like the sluttiest version of a nurse, cat, police officer, or cheerleader that you could ever dream. And since it’s our job to do it, we will be hard at work documenting the costumed exploits of the Kansas Jayhawk co-eds.↵

↵↵Anyone have a Mangino costume I can borrow?↵
