Of Course the Yankees Signed Sabathia

Despite the fact that CC Sabathia wanted to stay in the National League, specifically on the west coast, he is going to be playing in the A.L. next season for the Yankees. Naturally. Because, after waiting around for a couple weeks for any N.L. team to come anywhere close to what the Yanks could offer (seven years, $160 million), CC gave in, realizing the sad truth in baseball today: There are only a handful of teams that can compete in free agency, and none of them can offer the money New York can. CC never really had a choice.↵↵As you’d expect, the Yankees aren’t done winning the December World Series, according to ESPN’s Jayson Stark:↵

↵↵⇥They have also aggressively pursued A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe and Ben Sheets, and have made a one-year, $10-million offer to retain Andy Pettitte. So a rotation of Sabathia, Joba Chamberlain, Chien-Ming Wang and those two free-agent starters to be named later puts the Yankees in prime position to return to the postseason for the first time in two years.↵↵So, really, there are two ways to look at this: 1) It further demonstrates that, while I love baseball, it sucks sometimes. The lack of an MLB salary cap is a bigger problem in sports right now than the lack of an NCAA football playoff; 2) These massive free agent signings by the Yankees are great because it’ll just make it all the more sweet when they fail to make the playoffs ... again. Or maybe it’s some combo of those two.↵↵Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be the bitter Orioles fan over here enjoying our new toy: Ryan Fr’real Freel. ↵
