Robert Marve was leaning toward transferring from Miami anyway, but when Canes coach Randy Shannon fired offensive coordinator Patrick Nix and announced that freshman Jacory Harris would be the starter going into spring, the former starting QB made the decision to transfer. Miami to Robert Marve: You May Transfer Anywhere Except Everywhere

↵By rule, Marve must sit out a year, but thanks to the whims of Shannon, Marve faces additional restrictions: under terms of his release, Marve will not only be forbidden from transferring in-state, but cannot play anywhere in the ACC or SEC, either. Why? Because Miami said so, basically, because college athletes who transfer are largely at the mercy of their former schools, re: the terms of their release. The schools can do whatever they like, including putting draconian limits on their transfer options as Shannon has done to Marve by forbidding transfer not only in-conference, but to the nearest major geographic megaconference, the SEC. ↵
↵↵Why Shannon didn’t go farther and include the Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-10, Big East, Mountain West, Big Sky Conference, Mexican Football-not-futbol league, Finnish Men’s Conference, The MEAC, and Major League Baseball in the list of prohibited transfers is a mystery. He could have left him with fewer options by limiting him to Mongolia, New Guinea, and Hawaii. I’m pretty sure the NCAA allows schools to do this by rule, because remember: they’re not professionals, and therefore can be controlled like chattel.
