Young Max Kellerman Wants to Rumble, Yo

A rap video featuring HBO boxing analyst Max Kellerman has been making the blog-rounds today. It’s a number called “Young Man Rumble” by the unfortunately named duo Max & Sam, Sam being Max’s now-deceased brother Sam Kellerman.

↵↵In respect to the departed, I probably wouldn’t hate on this thing even if I felt it warranted hatin’, but people, let me tell you something – in Large’s respectful opinion, it don’t. Yeah, yeah, neither of the brothers K is a Lil Weezy in training, but I’ve heard worse. Apparently the track was cut in ’94 and it certainly sounds like it – the beat is wacker than the m.c.’s if you ask me, very low-grade Cypress Hill.↵

↵↵Sam has a spitfire flow which is boring, but not terrible. I actually prefer Max, who gets all “Jump Around” on the track while referencing Roberto Duran, the obligatory Tyson mention, and, no surprise if you know Max, Pernell Whitaker (in the rap Max says Pernell beat the eff out of Chavez, which most believe is true despite the drawn decision).↵

↵↵I’m most interested in two things about this development – 1. They were on Columbia Records. 2. There’s footage of Ali and Pernell in the video. Anybody who has ever had anything to with sports television knows that clearing fight footage is not cheap. In other words, some money got spent on this thing. Who knew that Max Kellerman had a major label deal on the mic? ↵

↵

↵↵(Ed. Note: After the jump is a must-watch clip of Large's contribution to the somewhat obscure genre of boxing inspired R+B/Hip-hop.) ↵

↵↵P.S. If I may turn to some shameless self-promotion here, allow me to direct you to another music video featuring another boxing writer of lesser renown. Here’s a song I did for MSG’s Mecca of Boxing documentary last year, “Ali/Frazier.’ Max went all House of Pain, but me, I took it Curtis Mayfield. Word. And yes, that is me in the video, and yes, I could give you a serious beatdown and so laugh at your peril.↵
