Trevor Immelaman Goes From First to Worst

Dah, Trevor? Hootie Johnson just called – Augusta wants its green jacket back.↵
↵In his first trip back to the links since his win at The Masters, Trevor Immelman is not exactly representing. He’s a whopping eight-over-par after his first round at the Byron Nelson, putting him tied for dead last in the field at the moment and 11 strokes off the leaders. ↵
↵↵Out of curiosity I went back and looked at how some of the other recent first-time Masters winners fared in their return to the golf course, and though none of them won, none of them quite spit the bit the way Trevor is doing out there today. Zach Johnson played the very next week after his Masters win last year and finished sixth. In 2004, Phil Mickelson took a week off after winning his first green jacket and placed 3rd at the MCI. The previous year, Mike Weir rested for almost a month after winning at Augusta, and then returned with a respectable 18th at the Wachovia. ↵
↵↵In other words, winning your first green jacket does not necessarily have to provoke a nervous breakdown the next time you walk on a golf course. Be forewarned, though, Trevor – dating back to Vijay Singh in 2000, first-time Masters winners have not won again on tour in that calendar year. Although, given your current predicament, maybe you shouldn’t worry about that so much. Just concentrate on not spontaneously combusting.↵
