NFL Draft: Round 6 Analysis

Round 5 brought quarterbacks back to life and off the board on Day 2. As for the sixth-round picks, you can expect the unexpected:
↵
↵The first non-football player goes. I really don’t understand why all the teams just don’t agree to not draft punters and kickers and get them as free agents instead. Oh well, I guess they can help win some games, too. The Redskins land the first leg of the draft, Ray Guy-winning punter Durant Brooks from Georgia Tech.
↵
↵Time to talk Texans. Houston, we have a really good draft. Gary Kubiak and friends have been methodically addressing needs everywhere, including offensive tackle, cornerback, running back, outside linebacker and defensive tackle. They stay diverse in going after positions by draft a good-value safety, Minnesota’s Dominique Barber. The Texans haven’t been flashy, but they deserve more attention for some consistently helpful picks.

↵A good Omon for Buffalo. So much for Michigan’s Mike Hart being a good Day 2 pick. All sorts of other running backs are going off the board, including Xavier Omon to the Bills. Omon is a little older at 23, but he was very productive at little Northwest Missouri State as an all-around back. He’s another versatile guy to go with Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson.
↵
↵

↵Redskins say aloha to Brennan. Wow. I was expecting Hawaii quarterback and Heisman finalist Colt Brennan to go undrafted. I still think he’s a longshot to stick in the NFL. That delivery is too wacky and that offense was too gimmicky. And although he shook off his off-field woes out there in paradise, there should be at least a mild character concern back on the mainland. The ‘Skins have had the worst draft of any NFC East team.
↵
↵The undersized slide. Boston College cornerback DeJuan Tribble was once looking like a Day 1 pick, but with the concerns every team has about covering bigger receivers, smaller corners of his like are taking a hit. The Chargers grab him, but probably more with nickel/dime duty against smaller slot receivers in mind.
↵
↵↵Pats show brotherly love. Considering how well his brother and fellow former Nebraska linebacker Barrett Ruud is playing for the Buccaneers, you know Bo Ruud would get a shot somewhere. The Patriots needed young linebackers, and they’ve got plenty to choose from now. ↵

↵
↵Giants go for another Kentucky QB. Let’s just say Andre’ Woodson is built a lot differently than Jared Lorenzen. This is the least possible pressure Woodson would face on any NFL team. He’s a good raw project for the Super Bowl champs.
↵
↵Colts had to have Hart. After losing Dominic Rhodes, Indy’s running game wasn’t quite the same as second-year back Joseph Addai got a little banged up. Kenton Keith is an OK backup, but he’s got an off-field issue now. Former Michigan star back Mike Hart, with his no-nonsense pro-style play, is good for taking away 8-10 touches as a capable runner and receiver. Great value pick this late.↵
