70’s Remain More Awesome Than the Present

Forget the NBA Finals, and looming scandal. What’s really good is seventies stars talking about teams long out of contention. If you don’t feel a warm, prickly feeling in your heart while reading this Spencer Haywood interview in The Denver Post, you don’t love this game. And deserve to be shot.↵
↵
↵My favorite part comes when Haywood talks about the 1968 Olympics:↵↵⇥We all lived in the same living quarters. (Boxer) George Foreman, (sprinters) John Carlos and Tommie Smith (who wore the black gloves during the national anthem), we all hung out. We had (legendary sprinter) Jessie Owens come in to talk to us. I remember him talking and guys were whispering, “This Uncle Tom!” and he got a little heated up and said, “How would you S.O.B.‘s have felt running before Hitler? Huh? Huh? Huh?” That was the defining moment — like “Whoa.” ↵↵You’ve got Black power, Hitler, history, and a forgotten hoops great who loves to croon about the Holy Land. I LOVE THIS GAME!

↵Ed. note:

After the jump is some bonus 70’s goodness.
