Four PGs Fight For Two Spots on Olympic Team

The Olympics team race is on. Twelve spots, everyone but Kevin Garnett itching to come out and redeem the flags, getting cut an indication that, on some level, your basketball isn’t kosher enough. Or your position is way too deep.↵
↵
↵The Detroit News has some of what we’ve heard already: Kobe is in, Wade looks healthy enough to make it, Melo’s track record there can’t be ignored, no Suns will shine, and Boozer looks to be in despite a shaky playoffs. But the real drama might occur when it comes to the point guard spot:↵↵⇥Factor that in with the almost certainty that Jason Kidd will be the starting point guard and Billups would have to battle young and fresh Chris Paul and Deron Williams for the one remaining point guard spot, and he is starting to look like the odd man out.
↵⇥
↵⇥“I haven’t seen Chauncey lately,” Colangelo told the Rocky Mountain News. “He’s one of the players we’re considering.”↵↵

↵Billups was tres helpful on last summer’ qualifying team. But, as the articles states, if Wade makes it Colangelo’s not likely to carry three point guards. So that’s two spots, and Kidd, Billups, Paul and Williams all in the mix. I personally think Kidd is old, but I guess he’s earned it and can lead. On the other hand, if you include MVP candidate Paul, it’s getting increasingly hard to leave behind Deron Williams. One thing’s for sure: Billups, for all big steady-handedness and clutch shooting, just isn’t the kind of virtuoso these other three candidates are. Maybe, with the likes of Kobe, Wade, Bron, and Melo dominating the ball, that’s not such a bad thing.↵
↵
↵But really, if USA Basketball doesn’t send the MVP runner-up, aren’t we back in the relative universe of the Battier Dream Team?↵
