Cavs Do Well to Finally Lock-Up West

Since I spent a lot of the off-season wondering why Cleveland wouldn’t re-sign Delonte West, I should probably take some time to celebrate that the deal has arrived. So here it is: Hooray for the Cavs and West! Friends forever!
↵
↵Actually, when Terry Pluto breaks down the Cavs backcourt, it’s hard to not get a little excited. Cleveland and West agreed to a 3-year, $13 million deal. And, taken in tandem with the Mo Williams acquisition, there’s some real versatility brewing in the guard slots:↵↵⇥They wanted West back because he can play either point or shooting guard, much like newcomer Mo Williams. Last season, both spent about 90 percent at the point, but both also have experience defending some shooting guards ... Williams will start, with West and possibly Wally Szczerbiak competing to start at shooting guard. West could win that battle. Then they’d bring Szczerbiak and Gibson off the bench, although the two shooters would probably not be together much. They’d pair off with West or Williams. As for Sasha Pavlovic, he appears headed for the fifth guard spot unless he has a major improvement in camp or one of the other guards is injured.↵↵There are some defensive issues there, and playing West and Williams at the same time could be too much of a good thing -- after all, too much guard activity might distract the team from getting LeBron the darn ball. But when the team’s major hitch has been a lack of scoring, playmaking, and overall game outside of James, West and Williams are at least a step in the right direction. When someone, anyone, other than LeBorn can do something, all of a sudden things could really open up for the Mike Brown armada.↵
