Road to Game Day: Lovin’ Southern Hospitality

Words by Keith Arnold, who↵is touring the country with his brother Phil as they invade a different↵college campus each Saturday during the football season. They’ll be reporting back in this space with their various adventures. You can also keep tabs on their vagabonding over at RoadtoGameDay.com. This weekend, they're in Athens for the Alabama-Georgia game.

Newsflash: We’re from the great state of Minnesota. A weird place where college hockey is more popular than college football, and even though it can snow in pretty much any month other than June, July or August, we decided to build a baseball stadium without a roof. Not just because our owner (the richest in baseball) is cheap, but because we really love the outdoors. Or something.↵↵My point in saying all of this is that we’re from about as far above the Mason-Dixon line as you can be without being from Canada. So this whole Southern thing is unbelievably different. The great accents, the funny hair styles. How slow everybody talks and moves, and how down here, even fast food really isn’t fast. It is absolutely wonderful. For the first time on our tour, we were heading to a place without knowing someone at the school. Hell, we know one person in the entire state of Georgia. Literally one. (Plus, after catching Deliverance on cable a few weeks ago, and having to drive through Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to get here, I kept thinking we were going to blow a tire in the middle of the backwoods and have to find our way out. We were not going out Ned Beatty style.) ↵

↵Having heard about Southern Hospitality, and having no idea how to take advantage of it, I did what every other twenty something does when they want to meet people: Go on Facebook. So I started checking out different UGA groups. Insane Bulldog fan pages, ticket groups, Knowshon Moreno fan clubs. I sent a few pokes. I wrote on a couple walls. Even asked a few pretty girls to be friends. (We’re on fire… two for two!) And then, 53 minutes later, I received this:↵

↵↵⇥Hey man,↵⇥↵⇥I was just reading over your blog and saw that you were looking to meet some people down here in Athens.↵⇥

↵⇥↵⇥If you are looking for a host, you can come crash at our place. We’re expecting a ton of people to come down, but you guys are more than welcome.↵⇥

↵⇥↵⇥Our game day routine will follow something along this line:↵⇥

↵⇥↵⇥6:00- Wake up, hungover as hell
↵⇥630- Shower, Chick-fil-a
↵⇥700-Start setting up tailgate on North Campus
↵⇥730-Tap keg/start pouring bourbon/fill flasks for gameday
↵⇥830-College Gameday
↵⇥1230- Back at the tailgate/fire up grill
↵⇥1-6- Party
↵⇥6- Gametime, seats by 630
↵⇥11pm- College Gameday Final/Downtown↵⇥

↵↵God bless Southerners, and God bless Facebook. Without ever meeting a soul, we’ve got ourselves a place to crash, an amazing tailgater, and an invitation to some chick’s 22nd birthday party for tonight. (And because of our continued commitment to our loyal readers, we’re going to go attend. But only because you’re making us.) Even better, we’ve got a lead on a couple pretty Georgia gals who might help out with Episode Six for the world famous RTGD Videos, and this has suddenly turned into the most promising stop yet on the Road to Game Day. ↵↵Even though banks are failing and the stock market is tanking, all anybody wants to talk about around here is the Blackout this weekend. And this was before the funeral subplots. And with USC screwing the pooch and losing to Oregon State last night, this game all of a sudden has serious national championship ramifications. ↵

↵↵Now we’ve just got to buy tickets.↵
