Fake Grass Leads to More Gross Infections

↵The typical medical opposition to turf in lieu of grass on football fields stems from the relative lack of give the fake stuff has, which can cause ankle sprains to be worse than usual. It turns out a greater concern might be the myriad minor scrapes and burns the turf cause on players’ arms. Via SbB, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports two 49ers have gone down with brutal staph infections made possible by on-the-field abrasions. (One appears to have been caused by infield dirt, another scourge on football.)

↵Bloomberg reported last year Texas, which features turf in 18% of its high school stadiums, has an enormous staph infection rate. Without getting too simple, staph is like a flesh-eating illness. Search Google images if you don’t believe me.

↵I assume colleges and the NFL will sooner force players to wear long sleeves before going back to the real greenery. Actually, I doubt anyone will do anything about it. But hey, cleanliness is important. Scrub those wounds, athletes of America, lest you die of a rather sissy football injury. A season-ending rug burn can’t be good for the ol’ reputation.↵
