Let’s take a quick spin around the web for a look at what happened on Sunday in fantasy football.
Sunday’s Fantasy Headlines
CBS Sports takes a look at the headliners from the weekend, including some love for Cedric Benson.
Much has been made about the uneven performances of big-time WR's (and WR's in general) this year. But on Sunday the WR's came to life, led by surprise party-crasher Miles Austin.
Try this one on for size: Nine wide receivers from the Sunday afternoon games had two touchdowns. Nine! Miles Austin's 250 yards and two touchdowns was certainly the most surprising, and much of that was due to the Chiefs' poor tackling on his catches. Roddy White's 210 yards and two touchdowns also was a very pleasant surprise after three games of sub-60-yard receiving totals. His 90-yard touchdown came against 49ers shutdown cornerback Nate Clements, too. Jeremy Maclin, Kellen Winslow and both Seahawks receivers (T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Nate Burleson) were surprises too while we've come to expect performances like this from time to time from Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald and Brandon Marshall.
At Yahoo, Andy Behrens lays out the reasons fantasy owners of Peyton Manning are smiling week-to-week. I don't need to recap that part, but he has a bone to pick with the Jags and Mike Sims-Walker.
If you’re a Mike Sims-Walker owner, then you’re not satisfied with this “violation of team rules” nonsense. You need a more detailed explanation, possibly with pictures. The only clarification we have this morning is that Sims-Walker “violated the team itinerary during the team’s weekend stay” in Seattle. The itinerary is a sacred thing, of course, so you can understand why coach Jack Del Rio would choose to go without his only playmaking receiver. If you lose the itinerary, you lose your way of life. We are all diminished. If a few (thousand) of us had to lose fantasy match-ups, so be it.
Fanhouse tries to clear up a lot of confusion, including the Patriots running backs.
Sammy Morris is clearly the Patriots No. 1 running back. We suspected this is what would happen, and it did. The Patriots ran the football 27 times and Morris took 17 of the carries. He also caught two passes for 39 yards. The Patriots will continue to use several running backs, but with Fred Taylor injured, Morris the only runner Bill Belichick really trusts to handle more than an occasional carry. The Broncos have had a pretty solid run defense this season (ranked fifth entering the game), so Morris 68 yards on 17 runs (4.0 average per) is a good sign. He'll have a tough test against Tennessee but will get enough looks to be as productive as he was Sunday.
Tristan H. Cockcroft, at ESPN, ponders things such as the return of Roddy White.
Roddy White: So much for two things: the San Francisco 49ers prevent a stiff defensive challenge, and White is no longer an elite-caliber wide receiver with Tony Gonzalez in town. White beat the 49ers' talented defenders deep multiple times for long catches, totaling eight receptions for 210 yards and two touchdowns on the day. There won't be enough balls to go around for both White and Gonzalez to win you every matchup you play, but make no mistake, both of these guys will continue to help each other out defraying defensive attention.
