It’s not exactly a secret that ESPN is trying to push soccer to we stateside fans more and more in 2009. Their bid to broadcast English Premier League games on Saturday mornings was a huge step. But it’s the little things, too. Watching tonight’s Costa Rica-U.S. coverage, it’s obvious the network is not just offering people a chance to watch soccer but a chance to learn about it.
OK, So ESPN’s Soccer Coverage Is Pretty Awesome
↵Every bit of news is tinged with some context and explanation. And the U.S. qualifier doesn’t exist in a vacuum; the very capable Rob Stone and Robbie Mustoe just spent about 10 minutes breaking down notable international qualifying results and trends. If you started the night not knowing anything about soccer, you’d be pretty much caught up.
↵Which is likewise good for those of us who did begin the night with soccer knowledge in our brains, because we get to watch soccer without buying a second cable tier, or stealing the game from a shady streaming TV site. There is nothing bad about this.
