The Chicago Bears, looking to beef up their defensive line for this year and the future, traded for Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end Gaines Adams on Friday:
Bears Trade for Buccaneers’ Gaines Adams
Although the Bears have improved their pass rush under Marinelli and have 14 sacks going into Sunday's game at Atlanta, this obviously was a move looking toward the future. Adams, 26, was the fourth overall pick in ’07 and has plenty of years left.
This also might mean the Bears won’t resign veteran Adewale Ogunleye, whose contract expires after the season. Ogunleye, 32, leads the Bears with four and a half of the teams 14 sacks. His asking price might be too much for the Bears, and another team might be willing to give him a lucrative contract.
In return, the Buccaneers will receive a second-round pick in the 2010 draft. The Bears acted early trading for Adams, since the NFL trading deadline isn’t until Oct. 20. The Bears will need to release someone from their 53-man roster to make room for Adams.
