Remember that gimmick on NFL Prime Time a few years ago? (Okay, so like ten years ago). Whenever Chris Carter would score, someone would say… “What does Chris Carter do?” And then Tom Jackson would answer, “Catch touchdowns.”
Roughing the Passer Kills the Saints
↵For all the aspects of Prime Time that are now insufferable, I always liked that recurring banter. And you might as well say the same for New Orleans’ Darren Sharper. “What does Darren Sharper do?”
↵“Return interceptions for touchdowns.” (Note: doesn’t sound as cool.)
↵
He’s got 9 for his career, and nearly had a tenth against the Giants this afternoon, if not for a killer roughing the passer penalty on Saints LB Jonathan Vilma. And with that gift from Vilma, the Giants capitalized, scoring quickly on an Ahmad Bradshaw run, and making this a ballgame again. Saints 20, NYG 10, and Mr. Sharper would like a word with Mr. Vilma.
↵UPDATE: As this published, the Saints scored another touchdown, and now lead 27-10. Drew Brees’ statline for today? 15/17, 187 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT. The Saints defense could decapitate Eli Manning, sacrifice 80 yards of penalties on every drive, and Brees would still win it for the Saints. Ladies and Gentleman, your 2009 MVP!
