Landover, MD (Sports Network) – Two of Ryan Succop’s four field goals came in the fourth quarter, lifting Kansas City to a hard-fought 14-6 decision over the struggling Redskins for its first win of the season.Larry Johnson rushed for a season-high 83 yards on 23 carries, while Matt Cassel played mistake-free football for the Chiefs (1-5), throwing for 186 yards on 18-of-33 attempts in the club’s first win since Week 13 last season.
Chiefs 14, Redskins 6: ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ Boots Four Field Goals
Dwayne Bowe caught six passes for 109 yards, while Kansas City’s defense held the Redskins to seven first downs, forced two turnovers and capped it with a safety in the waning seconds to give Todd Haley his first win as a head coach.
Washington (2-4), which was playing its sixth straight winless opponent, was listless once again despite a quarterback change at halftime. Jason Campbell was benched after completing 9-of-16 passes for 89 yards with an interception, while Todd Collins finished with an equally miserable 75 yards on 6-of-14 throws.
Clinton Portis gained 78 of his 109 yards on one play and lost a fumble in defeat, the club’s third in four games.
Collins, playing in his first game since January 2008, was sacked on 3rd-and-6 from his own 49 yard-line five minutes into the final quarter. The Chiefs blocked the ensuing punt and took over at midfield.
They failed turn the block into points, keeping the game tied at 6-6, but Dustin Colquitt managed to pin Washington at its own one with a punt.
KC forced a three-and-out and a personal foul penalty aided the field-position battle, as the Chiefs took over at the Washington 36.
A first down was enough to get into Succop’s range, and the rookie, who was Mr. Irrelevant after being selected with the final pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, hit a 46-yarder with 3:36 to go.
The Redskins again failed to move the chains, and the Chiefs took advantage of a short field and a 32-yard catch by Bowe to pad its lead with Succop’s 24- yard field goal with 37 seconds left.
Tamba Hali capped the game with a sack of Collins in the end zone, snapping the Chiefs’ nine-game losing streak dating back to last season in humiliating fashion for Washington.
Both teams fumbled in enemy territory in a lifeless opening quarter, and Kansas City lit up the scoreboard first when Succop split the uprights to end a 10-play, 65-yard drive with 5:34 left before halftime.
A slow-moving two-minute drill by Washington went for naught before the break, as the Redskins decided against attempting a 53-yard field goal and opted to try a long pass into the end zone. Campbell’s heave was picked off, and the hosts were booed into the locker room by their fans.
Collins completed a 42-yard bomb to Santana Moss on the second play of the third quarter. The ‘Skins couldn’t keep moving the chains though, and settled for a 40-yard Shaun Suisham field goal to tie it.
Portis, who was on the sideline to start the half due to a bothersome ankle, broke off a 78-yard run the next time Washington had the ball. Three straight Collins incompletions resulted in Suisham coming in and hitting a 28-yarder.
Bowe caught passes 20 and 16 yards later in the third, setting up Succop’s 46- yard boot to tie the game with just over a minute remaining in the quarter.
