Some Kind Words About Jeff Mathis From People Who Really Like Jeff Mathis

Angels catcher Jeff Mathis just made the game-winning double in a must-win ALCS Game 3. Mathis is something of an unlikely candidate for this, seeing as his offensive line in 2009 was a mere .211/.288/.308. This is not very good at all. But screw that: Mathis just had a game-winning hit in an all-important game, and so the people that sponsor his Baseball Reference page deserve at least a brief reprint here. Take it away, folks:

Scioscia says Mathis is one of the Angels' most valuable players. With Ervin Santana struggling, guess who catches him? Mathis. The Yankees didn't win their first WS in the 90's until Joe Girardi joined the team. Mathis is that kind of catcher.

I'm not sure I agree with any of it -- no one with an OPS under .600 is anyone's most valuable player -- but tonight, none of that matters. For at least one night, Jeff Mathis is a fearsome slugger.
