In the NFL, when your team struggles, an appropriate response from the owner may be to speak out about the performance (it is most certainly not "hire a bingo caller"). So after the Titans lost in embarrassing fashion on Sunday (let us double-check ... yep, losing 59-0 qualifies as "embarrassing"), owner Bud Adams was quick to express his displeasure, saying that he "can't understand" the team's play, is unsure if they can win just one game this season and even went so far as to say that head coach Jeff Fisher, who's been in that position since 1994, is not guaranteed another year on the sidelines.
How Secure Is Jeff Fisher’s Job?
Music City Miracles has the highlights.
"If we end up losing every game or don't look better, I'd have to look at that pretty hard, you know what I mean?'' Adams said during a telephone interview Sunday night. "The way it is going, I don't know if we'll win any games, and that is unheard of in the National Football League*. Right now, it's as bad as I've seen it, and that's a long time. I've never had a team start out like this. We had the best record in the NFL last year. I can't understand it.''
And on Fisher’s future:
"Even if I am unhappy, you don't make changes in the middle of the season. You don't know what you might end up with,'' Adams said of the coaching staff. "We'll just have to see what happens the rest of the way. I'll have to make my decision after the season is up. Who knows, we might come back and win 10 games. Then it wouldn't look so bad compared to how we started out. We have to look at the overall picture. But right now we're not doing very well, and that worries me.''
While it may be a bit early to put Fisher on the proverbial “hot seat” -- after all, before this season, he had won 23 games in two years, had won 10 or more games and advanced to the playoffs six different times, and had a Super Bowl appearance. But on the other hand, they haven’t won a playoff game since 2003, and this year they’re 0-6 and have been outscored 127-26 in their past three games.
It may be time to at least think about the possibility of someone new calling the shots for the Titans next year.
*Does last season ring a bell, Mr. Adams?
