The Cincinnati Reds announced today that they will retain the services of all their coaches next year -- except for one. Dick Pole’s three-year tenure as the Reds’ pitching coach is now over. Despite being plagued with injuries, the Reds have managed to post a 4.52 ERA this year, which is good for seventh in the National League. So why was Pole fired?

↵↵[Reds general manager Walt] Jocketty on the firing:
↵“I think it was just as an organization we felt Dick has done a good job to this point. But we felt going forward things needed to change. There’s no real specific reason.
↵↵That’s about as ambiguous as it can get. I’m guessing that Jocketty called Pole into his office and then started slapping his desk with his palms. “Dude! YOUR NAME IS DICK POLE! HAHAHAHAHA!” After about 45 minutes of this, the downcast Pole sheepishly made his way out and began to weep while walking home in the rain. Not so funny now, huh?
