Soccer In Fenway? Soccahh In Fenway!

Tell Paul Revere to saddle-up again, because the British are coming. Fortunately this time, it’s would only be to play soccer. The Red Sox are toying with the idea of hosting an English Premier League game in Fenway Park.

“It’s absolutely an idea at this stage,’’ [Red Sox’ COO Sam] Kennedy said. “It might not even be a good idea.

“Our mission is to explore all sorts of what we call ‘blue chip events’ in Fenway Park. It started back in 2003 with the Bruce Springsteen concert. We’re having outdoor hockey games with the NHL and Hockey East. The concept of an English Premier League game at Fenway is very, very exciting, and fits in line with our standard of events.

“I don’t know that they would be interested in doing it. We need to do some more homework and see if it would work.’’

↵If the idea were ever to come to fruition, it would most likely occur in 2012, the 100th year of Fenway Park, and would probably have to take place during baseball’s offseason, so the soccer match didn’t tear up the field. So far, “the concept has been mentioned to Fulham officials but has not yet been discussed with the EPL.”

↵Dainty footballers who have a knack for flopping and faking injuries, playing in front of drunk Boston sports fans? What could possibly go wrong.
