What Fantasy Sports Can Teach Us About the Statistics Revolution

In a guest post this morning for excellent True Hoop affiliate Hardwood Paroxysm, DJ Turtleface—greatest pseudonym ever?—of SBN’s Straight Outta Vancouver checks in with a discussion of his fantasy basketball league and the now-ubiquitous science of advanced NBA statistics:

↵↵As these advanced statistics and mathematical analyses approach perfection, the dark secrets will continue to slip into everyone’s hands. Where can you go from there? …

↵I felt this trouble in my fantasy draft last night. I said somebody talked about rebounding rates; they were mentioning after I drafted Kevin Love. They mentioned projected minutes per game after I snagged Michael Beasely…

↵Everybody forgot about young guys because they were trapped in the player rater while I watched the games. I know these boys can f’n ball because I’ve seen them do it with my own two eyes – not because of their face-time with David Berri. And that’s why I’m convinced that the ultimate counter to the statistical revolution will, in the end, be good old fashioned basketball.

↵↵Lots of good stuff, there, and worth checking out, as fantasy sports really do present us with a perfect allegory—now that everyone knows everything about stats and everyone reads fantasy previews, what’s next? Who gets the edge?

↵

Perhaps, in a world besieged by PER and WINVAL and WoW and all sorts of other stat acronyms, simply “watching basketball and evaluating talent” will once again be the most prized of virtues.

↵Death of Autotune APBRmetrics? Not really, but their preeminence in basketball may be shortlived.
