Last night, the Ottawa Senators and the Nashville Predators set an NHL record for most combined goals in a game by defenseman with eight. Ryan Suter (2), Cody Franson, Shea Weber (2) all tallied for the Preds while Chris Campoli, Anton Volchenkov, and Chris Phillips scored for the Senators. In addition to the eight goals scored by defensemen, three more were scored by forwards, bringing the total number of goals scored in the game to 11. Does this seem backwards to anyone else? Shouldn’t the defensemen be PREVENTING the other team from scoring?
Aren’t These Guys Supposed To Stop People From Scoring?
↵I guess the Predators and Senators haven’t quite figured out that if their D-men played a bit more defensive-mindedly, they wouldn’t have to score as many goals themselves (and the goalies would be much happier to boot).
↵But hey, even if it bothers the purists, at least it makes the games exciting, right? Nobody wants to go back to the dead puck era where the left wing lock and the neutral zone trap turned a fast-paced, hard-hitting game into, well, soccer.
