The state of Rhode Island Legalized MMA on Wednesday, making it the most recent state to legalize the sport. From The Providence Journal:
Rhode Island Legalizes MMA
The committee also passed a controversial bill that would allow mixed martial arts fighting in the state. The form of hand-to-hand competition combines wrestling, boxing and other fighting forms.
The east coast is finally starting to cave in with Rhode Island giving the thumbs up as well as Massachusetts and New York looking as though they will begin to regulate the sport starting in 2010. Areas like Providence, RI can probably support a major UFC card and it’ll be interesting to see if the UFC has any interest in having a show there or if they would rather leave the general area untapped in hopes of having a Boston or New York card sometime in the near future.
