You may remember the situation from Game 2, but if you don’t, a refresher: Derek Jeter came to bat with runners on 1st and 2nd in the 7th inning. There were NO outs. NY was up 3-1 at this point. And then, things got stupid.
New Derek Jeter Intangible: Stupidity
↵First, Joe Girardi put the bunt on. Take a moment to ponder the stupidity of this decision. Derek Jeter is at the plate with the opportunity to blow the game open — or at least drive in an insurance run — and you’re going to instead take the bat out of his hands and give the Phillies an out. It wasn’t as if the Yankees were down a run and trying to get men to 2nd and 3rd with one out. Which, even in that case, the bunt might not make total sense. But it would make some sense, I guess. In this case, it’s inexplicable.
↵Then it got stupider. Jeter failed to get the bunt down on strike one. Took strike two. Then bunted strike three foul.
↵↵“It was dumb for me to try and do it with two strikes,” [Jeter] said. “I had the bunt early on and it was taken off, but I thought I would try to do it.”
↵↵I’m not sure which intangible this falls under, but in the boxscore it went down as his third K of the night. And in the game recap it went down as a blown opportunity for the Yankees, which helped keep Philly in the game.
