The NHL season kicked off on Thursday night but Saturday was opening night for many of the NHL teams. All 30 teams played on Saturday with 15 games in four different countries. The Florida Panthers and Chicago Blackhawks completed their trip to Helsinki, Finland and the Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues finished their two game series in Stockholm, Sweden. Of course there were also games played in the United States and Canada.
Many Surprises on NHL Super Saturday
There were many surprises on Super Saturday in the NHL with the Colorado Avalanche being the biggest surprise. Nobody expected the Colorado Avalanche to be 2-0 to start the season, especially playing against the San Jose Sharks and the Vancouver Canucks.
I'm sure I'm dreaming, but I'm not going to complain one bit, because this dream is almost as good as that one I had about those to girls from...er, actually, no I guess it's not quite that good. Still, it's been an absolute blast. After manhandling a terrible Sharks team on Thursday, the Avalanche followed up with another solid showing today, blanking the Vancouver Canucks 3-0.
That is what Mile High Hockey had to say about the 2-0 start by the Colorado Avalanche. If this trend continues it will make the SB Nation power poll flip upside down by next week.
The Detroit Red Wings and Vancouver Canucks are both 0-2 in the Western Conference. Detroit lost twice to the Blues in Stockholm and the Canucks dropped their opener to Calgary on Thursday and lost 3-0 to the Avalanche on Saturday.
Despite the Canucks’ slow start, Nucks Misconduct is not worried...
Like I said earlier: the Canucks will get going. This is an unfortunate learning curve that I wish they didn’t have to go through. But strength comes through adversity does it not? Discuss.
Another surprise was the Phoenix Coyotes. After a tumultuous off-season that seen the team be put in bankruptcy, the possibility of moving to Hamilton and eventually losing their coach, the Coyotes doubled the Los Angeles Kings 6-3 on Saturday.
