An NHL Fight is Controversial, No Way

The Pensburgh blog has posted an interesting take on the hit thrown by Brendan Witt and the ensuing fight between Witt and Jay McKee in the Penguins-Islanders game this past Saturday. In case you missed it, here is the hit and the fight:

↵I believe, and Pensburgh agrees with me, that it was a clean hit by Witt. So why go after Witt? Unfortunately, teams in the NHL have developed the ridiculously misguided notion that you can no longer even cleanly hit “stars” hard without facing retribution (also, the notion that Fedotenko is a “star” worth defending on a team with Malkin and Crosby is a little puzzling to me). The star players and their teams need to man up; hard hits are a part of hockey. Furthermore, the so-called “star” players should be good enough and aware enough to not put themselves in a position to get lit up like Fedotenko did. Instead, star players should all take a page out of Ovechkin’s book. If somebody hits you, don’t rely on somebody else to do your dirty work, just do this back:
