According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Eli Manning may have a lingering foot injury called “Plantar Fasciitis.” You may have heard of it, and while it’s not likely to keep players out for extended time periods, it’s extremely painful, and has a tendency to linger. From Mortensen:
Giants’ Manning May Have Plantar Fasciitis
As I suspected, Eli Manning may have Plantar Fasciitis, awaiting MRI. Painful injury runs from heel across bottom of foot.
And then a moment later, Mortensen qualified his statement:
Doesn’t mean Eli will miss time but anybody who has it (me included) will tell you it is a pain in the foot that needs disciplined rehab.
Again, while it seems Giants coach Tom Coughlin’s fears of ACL damage were unfounded, this isn’t just an afterthought of an injury. And for the 4-0 Giants, who otherwise have looked like the best team in the league thus far, an injury to their star quarterback is a worst-case scenario, and one that’ll presumably be met with the utmost caution in the coming weeks. We’ll have more news as it emerges, but as we wait official word, the internet's resident injury expert, Will Carroll, cautions against premature diagnosis:
Symptoms don't match for E Manning and plantar fasciitis. Was he hiding this a while? Not usually suddenly painful. Heel spur alone? Maybe.
