In Jay Bilas’ most recent ESPN blog post, he talks about some recent NCAA rules changes. (Insider only.) Between nuggets about recruiting phone calls, National Letter of Intent reform, charges and blocks under the basket, and subbing injured players on foul shots is an item that will undoubtedly lead to the NCAA switchboards being inundated with phone calls from America’s Dairyland:
The Rule that May Force Wisconsin out of the NCAA
↵↵ An NCAA memo went out to member institutions awhile back about bagel and bread spreads. In locker rooms all over the country, programs have fruit, energy bars and bagels, which is legal. However, according to the memo, provididing (sic) cream cheese and butter is illegal. I’m not sure what this rule is all about, but I would love to have been in the meeting room to hear the discussion when it was decided.
↵↵This rule leads me to ask two questions:
↵Are dairy products now considered extra benefits for student-athletes? (If so, watch for an increased number of broken bones this season.) And two: Is lox covered?
